Find the Right Floating Frame for Your Existing Canvas
A floating frame for canvas is a simple way to give an existing stretched canvas a more finished, contemporary presentation without covering the front of the artwork.
These frame-only products are designed for customers who already own a stretched canvas. Choose a frame based on the size and depth of your existing canvas, then select the material, style or finish that best complements your artwork and interior.
Browse the floating frames for canvas above to compare available options. If your canvas does not match a listed size, custom-size framing may also be available.
Why Choose a Floating Frame for Canvas?
A floating frame can refresh an existing stretched canvas, add definition around the artwork and create a cleaner finished appearance on the wall.
A Clean Floating Effect
A narrow space between the stretched canvas and outer frame creates the appearance that the artwork is floating inside the frame.
Keep the Canvas Visible
The frame does not need to overlap the front surface of the artwork, helping preserve the full visual appearance of the canvas.
Add More Definition
The outer frame creates a stronger visual boundary around the artwork and can help the canvas stand out from the wall.
Refresh Existing Artwork
Adding a new frame can change the presentation of a canvas you already own without replacing or reprinting the artwork.
Coordinate with Your Interior
Different finishes make it easier to coordinate your existing canvas with furniture, wall colors and surrounding decor.
Suitable for Many Canvas Types
Photo canvases, paintings, portraits, landscapes and suitable stretched artwork can all work well with a floating frame.
Floating Frames for Canvas Are Frame-Only Products
This category is intended for customers who already have a stretched canvas and want to add a separate floating outer frame.
You Already Have a Stretched Canvas
Choose from this category when you already own a finished stretched canvas and want to add an outer floating frame.
Your canvas may be a photograph, painting, printed design or other compatible stretched artwork.
You Need a New Canvas and Frame Together
If you want to upload a photograph and have both the canvas print and floating frame produced together as one finished product, this frame-only category is not the correct option.
Explore Floating Frame Canvas Prints →How to Choose a Frame for Your Canvas Print
Choosing the correct frame starts with the canvas you already own. Before ordering, measure its exact width, height and depth and compare those measurements with the individual product options.
Check the Canvas Width
Measure from the outside left edge of the stretched canvas to the outside right edge.
Check the Canvas Height
Measure from the outside top edge to the outside bottom edge of the stretched canvas.
Check the Canvas Depth
Measure from the front surface of the stretched canvas to the furthest back edge of its stretcher frame.
Choose Material and Finish
Compare the available products and select a frame style that suits both the canvas and the room where it will be displayed.
Measure the Canvas Itself, Not the Finished Frame
When selecting a size, use the actual outside dimensions of your existing stretched canvas. Do not add extra space for the floating gap or the outer frame.
For example, if your canvas measures 20 × 30 inches, look for a frame option designed for a 20 × 30 inch canvas. The completed framed piece will naturally be larger than 20 × 30 inches because the gap and outer frame extend beyond the artwork.
Canvas Depth Is Just as Important as Width and Height
Different stretched canvases use different stretcher-bar profiles. Two pieces may have exactly the same front dimensions but very different depths.
This is why a floating frame for stretched canvas should be selected using all three measurements: width, height and depth.
Check the depth options on the individual product page before ordering. If your existing canvas uses an unusual profile, contact us before placing the order.
How the Floating Gap Works
Unlike a conventional picture frame that may overlap the edge of the artwork, a floater frame leaves a narrow visible space between the stretched canvas and the surrounding outer frame.
This creates a subtle shadow line and gives the artwork greater visual depth. Many of our frame designs use an approximately 5 mm gap around the canvas, although individual product specifications should always be checked before ordering.
This style is particularly useful when you want the full front face and outer edge of the canvas to remain part of the presentation.
Compare Floating Frame Materials and Styles
Floating frames can be made from different materials, each offering a different look, weight and presentation style. Materials, profiles, colours and available canvas depths vary between products, so always check the individual product specifications before ordering.
Polymer Floating Frames
Polymer frames offer a clean, lightweight framing option and can be produced in a range of decorative finishes, including wood-look and solid-colour styles depending on the product.
They are a practical choice for many photo canvases and everyday interior applications.
Wood Floating Frames
Real wood frames provide natural material character and can create a warmer, more substantial presentation around the canvas.
Wood options are particularly suitable when you want the frame itself to contribute more strongly to the finished look.
Aluminum Floating Frames
Aluminum floating frames offer a sleek, modern appearance with clean edges and a refined metal finish. They work well with contemporary photography, abstract artwork, office interiors and modern home decor.
Aluminum is a good option when you want a crisp, slim and more architectural frame style around your existing stretched canvas.
Choosing the Right Frame Finish
There is no single frame colour that works for every canvas. Consider the dominant colours in your artwork and the room where the finished piece will be displayed.
Black
Black creates strong definition and can work particularly well with photography, monochrome artwork and contemporary spaces.
White
White creates a lighter appearance and works well in bright, minimal interiors and with softer photographs or artwork.
Natural and Wood Finishes
Natural-looking finishes complement many landscapes, paintings, family photographs and interiors featuring warmer materials.
Decorative Finishes
Gold, silver and other decorative finishes can add contrast or warmth where a stronger framing presence is preferred.
Can't Find the Exact Canvas Size You Need?
Many common sizes can be ordered directly from the products above. However, paintings, panoramic canvases, artist-stretched artwork and older canvas prints may use dimensions that do not match standard size lists.
Our Custom Floating Frame for Canvas product includes a range of ready-to-order sizes and also provides an option to contact us when your canvas requires a different size.
